8 Spectators Killed At US California 200 Off-Road Race

On Saturday night, the sports suffered perhaps its worst crash in decades when eight spectators were killed and 12 injured in a race in the Mojave Desert called the California 200. Shortly after the start of the 200-mile race, one of the competing trucks sailed off a rock pile and rolled into a crowd.

As dozens of people ran and screamed, the truck landed upside down in a column of dust. The driver was not hurt and some witnesses, according to The Associated Press, said he had to flee to escape angry spectators, although others disputed that account.

“There were just bodies everywhere,” Dave Conklin, a photographer covering the event told The A.P.. “One woman with a major head wound was lying in a pool of blood. Someone else was crushed beneath the car.”

Another witness, Matt March, 24, of Wildomar, Calif., told the wire service that the truck “hit the rock and just lost control and tumbled.”

Mr. March said he and other spectators lifted the truck and found four people lying unconscious who had been pinned underneath.

Helicopters airlifted the injured, though the location is so remote that it took half an hour to reach it. Six people died at the scene and two others died at Loma Linda University Medical Center. It was not clear why the driver lost control of the truck.

Advocates for the sport say that one of its attractions is that it is literally more freewheeling than, say, NASCAR races of stock cars. There are no barriers shielding the crowd, except for snow fencing at the start and finish lines, and crowds tend to cluster around those quirks in the terrain that will offer the most thrills, like the rock pile “jump” where Saturday night’s crash occurred.

“A lot of spectators were congested in one area to see the vehicle go into the air, and that’s entertainment for the spectators,” said Wayne Nosala, a regional director for legislation for the California Off-Road Vehicle Association and a desert racer himself who heard from friends who were at the race.

“The unwritten rule is you stay 100 feet from the course, but some people stay within five feet of the course. And when the truck got out of control, the crowd was there when it should have been back 100 feet,” he said.

He said that the promoters of such races — like the one that operated Saturday’s, Mojave Desert Racing — cannot afford the manpower to keep spectators back and often rely on federal and state land managers who normally patrol the desert to try to keep the crowd back.

Beyond racing, millions of people like to take off-road vehicles — specially adapted trucks, cars and motorcycles — over desert and other natural terrain. In California, there are over 1 million people who have purchased “green stickers,” essentially licenses that allow them to drive vehicles over rough terrain.

California is one of only a few states that permit desert racing — some are allowed in Nevada and Arizona — and only a few locations can hold them. In the Mojave, Mr. Nosala said, a half dozen races are held a year, often at night to avoid blistering daytime temperatures.

The 40-year-old sport has been attacked in the past by some environmental groups, who says its endangers animal and plant species like the desert tortoise, the Mojave ground squirrel and the kangaroo rat, but advocates argue that other forces like suburban development are a bigger threat to those species.

In 1994, Mr. Nosala said, President Bill Clinton signed an act barring most of the American desert from being used for races.

Corey Fisher, Villanova Guard, Score 105 Pts In A NYC Street Ball Game

New York City has a new street ball legend.

The basketball world is buzzing with reports of Bronx-bred college basketball star Corey Fisher's jaw-dropping 105-point game at a playground in his home borough.

Though the feat wasn't videotaped, attendees of the Dyckman Park Basketball game at Watson Gleason Playground last Saturday confirm that the Villanova University guard torched his semipro opponents.

"At the end of the third quarter, I had 71 points," Fisher told the Daily News yesterday. "I was pretty tired. But I kept pushing. I continued to score and score."

Fisher's performance bests by five points what is believed to be the previous record, set in 1978 by the legendary Fly Williams in Jamaica, Queens.

He now ranks among such street ball icons as Earl (The Goat) Manigault and Nate (Tiny) Archibald, said Dyckman Park Basketball program supervisor Isaiah Brown, who saw the game, put on by Dyckman Youth Enterprises.

"[Fisher's tally] has to be a street ball record," said Brown.

The game's announcer, Joe Pope, told The News that Fisher scored 105 of the Dyckman team's 138 points. The captain of the opposing team, GymsRatsNYC, and other witnesses also confirmed the score, Rivals.com reported.

Fisher's scorching hot streak carried his team to a 138-130 victory, said Kenneth Stevens, Dyckman president.News of Fisher's score went viral on Twitter this week, as fans and skeptics weighed in. The hype took Fisher by surprise.

"I didn't think nothing of it," he said.

The 6-foot-1 senior hit a deep three-point shot to open Saturday's 40-minute game and never looked back, said Brown.

"Everybody knew Corey would have a big night. But nobody knew it would be as big as it was," he said.

As Fisher heated up, his Bronx fans turned up the volume.

"He was the hometown hero," said Brown. "As soon as he got to 99, the crowd started to go bonkers."

Fisher was closely guarded throughout, said Brown. He beat a defender on a crossover dribble to make the game's final shot.

Wilt Chamberlain holds the record for the most points in a National Basketball Association game. In 1962, he racked up 100.

Fisher's scoring burst shocked the blogosphere, but not former Bronx coach Casey Williams.

Williams watched Fisher explode for 71 points in high school, he said.

"He's what we call a pathological scorer," said New York City Basketball Hall of Fame and Five-Star Basketball Camp founder Howard Garfinkel.

Four Teams Agree On Trade

Trevor Ariza was sent to the New Orleans Hornets and Darren Collison to the Indiana Pacers in a four-team, five-player trade Wednesday.

In the trade, the Houston Rockets sent Ariza to the Hornets, who in turn sent Collison and James Posey to the Pacers.

The Pacers sent Troy Murphy to the New Jersey Nets. And the Nets sent Courtney Lee to the Rockets

The Hornets didn't stop there. NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that in a separate deal, the team agreed to send swingman Julian Wright to Toronto for Raptors guard Marco Belinelli. That deal was expected to be completed Wednesday.

The four-team deal could fill some long-term needs for the Hornets, Pacers and Nets, as well as provide needed salary relief for the Rockets.

For the Hornets, while moving Collison leaves them without a credible backup for Chris Paul, the addition of Ariza gives them a young, athletic wing entering his prime.

Video Footage Just Released Of Woman Fight With McDonald's Workers Over McNuggets

Toledo, OH (WTVG) -- The woman who attacked a McDonald's drive-thru worker made national headlines. Now you can see the attack for yourself.

The woman wanted McNuggets from a McDonalds in Toledo which was only serving breakfast. She reacted by punching the drive-thru worker in the mouth and shattering the drive-thru window.

It all happened around 6 a.m. New Year's Day at the east side McDonalds at the corner of Main and Front. Surveillance video, released today, captures the assault as it unfolds. The woman in the car is Melodi Dushane, 24 years old at the time.

The video doesn't have sound, but it appears Dushane and the employee get in a verbal argument before it escalates. Dushane gets out of her car while another worker tries to close the window. She punches that woman in the face and continues yelling. At one point, she even appears to lift her leg to attempt to climb in.

When the first employee returns, Dushane hits her too. That woman grabs a hold of Dushane's hair, but she lets go. It then takes three McDonald's employees to slide the window closed while Dushane continues to try and keep it open.

She then starts ramming her elbow against the glass, goes back into her car, and emerges to throw a bottle through the window before driving off.

Last month, Dushane got 60 days behind bars and three years probation. She also has to pay McDonalds more than $1,500 for the damages. She apologized to the court, and her attorney says she was drinking the night of the incident and suffers from panic attacks, which she blames for leading up to the attack.

The McDonald's employees, on the other hand, managed to keep their cool. In the video they can be seen calmly handing food through the window to the next customer.
